Olympic sprinter Tyson Gay’s 15-year-old daughter Trinity was shot and killed outside a restaurant in Lexington, Kentucky, in the early hours of Sunday, October 16.

According to a police statement to The Associated Press, officers were called to the parking lot of a restaurant near the University of Kentucky campus around 4 a.m. after witnesses reported gunfire being exchanged between two vehicles.

Trinity was not believed to be in either vehicle, according to police spokeswoman Brenna Angel. The authorities were able to locate one of the vehicles for questioning but are still searching for the second one.

According to local station Lex 18, Tyson, 34, was heartbroken by the news. “She didn’t make it,” he told the station. “I’m so confused. She was just here last week for fall break. It’s so crazy. I have no idea what happened.” Tyson also told the station that he was flying back to Lexington on Sunday.

The station also reports that Trinity was shot in the neck and immediately taken to the nearby UK Hospital in a private vehicle, where she was later pronounced dead.

“Sending our thoughts & prayers to @TysonLGay & his loved ones as they mourn the tragic & senseless loss of his daughter, Trinity,” USA Track and Field tweeted.

The Kentucky High School Athletic Association Commissioner Julian Tackett also shared his condolences via the social media platform, tweeting, “Shocked to hear of death of Trinity Gay. A life of such potential cut so tragically short. Sympathies to Tyson and entire family.”

Tyson competed in the last three summer Olympics and was part of the team that won the silver medal in the 4x100-meter relay at the 2012 London Games.

Trinity was also an aspiring athlete who sprinted at Lafayette High in Lexington. According to The AP, she finished fourth in the 100 meters and fifth in the 200 meters at the state Class 3A high school track meet this past May.
